By Jamel Herring – Semper Fi. Always Faithful. Not “sometimes”, not “when I feel like it”, or “when it’s convenient,” but always; every second of every day of every year for your entire life. It’s not just my nickname, it’s a way of life. It’s the way elite warriors greet each other and when you hear those words you know someone always has your back.
I wasn’t always a warrior. I started boxing at the age of 16. It wasn’t until two years later, when I joined the Marine Corps and became part of the legacy and tradition of the greatest fighting force the world has ever produced, that I understood what Semper Fi meant. The values I learned as a Marine got me through two tours in Iraq where all we had was our brothers.
Those values helped me earn a silver medal in the World Military Games, became the USA Boxing National Champion, the U.S. Olympic Trials Champion, and the first active duty Marine to represent the U.S. in boxing at the Olympics since 1992, where I was humbled and honored to be named team captain.
Following the Olympics, I decided to pursue a professional boxing career. Semper Fi means as much to me today as it did in the streets of Fallujah. When I hear the words “Semper Fi” boom out over the loudspeaker before a fight, I know I’m not alone in that ring. Everyone who has earned the title Marine has each other’s back.
